The increasing popularity of Salesforce’s software has spawned a host of jobs for people who can manage and build upon the technology, both at the firm’s customers and its reselling partners. In fact, the Salesforce ecosystem is expected to create 4.2 million new jobs worldwide between 2019 and 2024, according to a 2019 research report from IDC.
To help build a pipeline of candidates for these positions, Salesforce created a free online learning platform called Trailhead, while several tech staffing agencies and training programs have popped up to help people prepare for these role as well.
Once people undergo training, they typically take a Salesforce certification course either online or in-person, which generally costs between $200 and $400 (the pandemic has notably limited options to take tests in-person). Some Salesforce partners also have bootcamps where they pay people to take trainings and exams.
A Salesforce admin role – through the admin certification – is typically the first job someone gets in the ecosystem and from there they can complete more specialized certifications, like for Marketing Cloud software.
Business Insider spoke to experts in the Salesforce ecosystem to learn how to get hired for four roles: Salesforce administrator, Salesforce developer, Salesforce architect, and Salesforce consultant.
We also looked at federal salary data for 994 roles with Salesforce in the job title that American companies have to disclose when they apply for visas for current or prospective foreign workers, to see what these roles typically pay. The data collected and published by the Office of Foreign Labor Certification only includes base salaries for foreign workers and the roles they were hired for, but it is a rare snapshot into what some of these jobs pay.
Salesforce administrators are responsible for managing their organization’s usage of the platform and making sure users are getting as much value out of it as possible. A Salesforce admin would onboard and train new users, provide support, implement new features, and customize the platform for their organization.
However, a certification alone won’t get you a job: You need work experience at a training organization or a non-profit before moving on, said Ted Elliot, CEO of Copado, which helps companies deploy Salesforce software. His own company has hired people from a staffing organization that trains people and then places them at companies for real-world work experience.
“A really good Salesforce administrator is someone who’s got great problem solving skills and is also dogged about learning how to do things on their own,” Elliot said. Admins can quickly become essential to a company, he added.
An average salary for a Salesforce admin in the US is $91,000, according to a report from Burning Glass, a jobs market research firm. Federal visa data showed a salary range of $55,000 to $155,000. These are few of the roles included in the data with location and salaries.
Salesforce developers are software developers who build on top of the Salesforce platform. They have coding experience and are tasked with expanding the functionality of Salesforce’s existing tools. These jobs require people who know how to use programming languages like Java and C#. Salesforce’s own proprietary coding language Apex is similar to Java.
People may even start their coding careers as a Salesforce developer.
“Having a computer science degree always helps, but we’ve actually seen people coming in with just Java development experience being successful as well,” said Line Caspersen, who runs a Salesforce and cloud career training company called Revolent.
An average salary for a Salesforce developer in the US is $108,000, according to the report from Burning Glass. Federal visa data showed a salary range of $62,000 to $215,868. These are few of the roles included in the data with location and salaries.
Salesforce consultants typically work at consulting or partner companies and are brought in to work on specific problems companies have implementing Salesforce’s software. They’re often placed on a team with Salesforce admins and program managers to either set up a company’s Salesforce usage or take on a project.
“A consultant has a business acumen merged with the technical acumen,” said Ryan Westwood, CEO of Salesforce partner Simplus. “So they speak to solutioning strategy, advising, adopting technology, not just the technical component of the technology.”
Becoming a consultant usually requires some prior experience as an admin, and most of the consultant certifications require the admin certificate as a prerequisite. Consultants have to be able to understand business processes for the industry they work in and manage communication between business users and IT, Caspersen said.
Salesforce offers consultant certifications for most of its products including Sales, Service, education, Einstein and AI, and Community Cloud.
An average salary for someone with the title Salesforce consultant in the US is $110,000, but specialization leads to higher pay, according to the report from Burning Glass. Federal visa data showed a salary range of $70,845 to $200,000. These are few of the roles included in the data with location and salaries.
Salesforce architects start their careers as admins and developers, and roles typically require a few years of experience and multiple certifications. People in this role are usually designing a company’s entire Salesforce usage and helping it grow. They usually work at consulting companies, but large companies often have Salesforce architects internally as well because of the size of their organization.
The number one skill architects need is knowledge of best practices for using Salesforce, said Lauren Zolp, a Salesforce Solution Architect at HigherEchelon, which partners with government organizations to implement Salesforce technology.
“Architects are the high level individuals who say we will use this tool versus that,” Zolp said. “They kind of set the tone.”
An average salary for a Salesforce architect in the US is between $105,000 and $140,000 depending on specialization, according to a report from Burning Glass. Federal visa data for roles with “Salesforce architect” in the job title showed a salary range of between $67,475 and $225,900.
